Senior Chinese and Russian officials called for close policy coordination on bilateral and international affairs during security talks as foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations pressed Beijing to help rein in Moscow in Ukraine.During the latest round of strategic security consultations on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a Politburo member who also heads the Communist Party’s foreign affairs office, had an “in-depth exchange of views on a wide range of issues related to the deepening of strategic cooperation” with Nikolai Patrushev, the head of the Security Council of Russia.

The Chinese foreign ministry said the two sides “strengthened coordination and enhanced mutual trust” during the meeting.

Wang said close policy coordination with Russia had strengthened bilateral relations, which “have withstood the test of international storms and changes”.

Amid isolation, China has no choice but to move closer to Russia: expert

Under the strategic security consultation mechanism, senior officials of the two sides have met almost every year since 2005.
