Hong Kong’s Tiffany Yue Nga-yan put in the performance of a lifetime to claim Asian Games bronze in the women’s long jump on Monday, in a contest won by Chinese teenager Xiong Shiqi.

Yue soared a personal best 6.50 metres at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, bettering the 6.49 she posted at a meet in Lisbon, Portugal, in June last year.

The 25-year-old’s form this year, however, had not hinted at a new personal best and Hong Kong record, given she only managed 6.23 when finishing seventh at the Asian Championships.

And her opening leap of 6.21 did little to suggest her next attempt would send her into the history books.

“I’d thought 6.5 meters was something I should be able to do here but I wasn’t expecting that would be enough to hold on for a bronze,” she said.
