China’s first National Day holiday since it lifted all Covid restrictions has seen a heavy increase in the number of journeys taken compared with the previous year.

The Ministry of Transport said the country’s railways, roads, waterways and planes were expected to carry 53.4 million passengers on Monday, up 56.4 per cent on the fourth day of the holiday last year.

This year saw the traditional Mid-Autumn holiday falling on Friday, two days before the October 1 National Day holiday, meaning this year’s “golden week” holiday lasts for a total of eight days, which gives people more time to travel.
